Directions

The Redwood Coast of California is located approximately three hours north of the San Francisco Bay Area’s Golden Gate Bridge, includes northern Sonoma and southern Mendocino counties, and extends along some of the most spectacular coastline in the world.

Suggested routes from all directions are listed below.

Highway 101 north through Santa Rosa to the River Road exit. Follow River Road through Guerneville, and continue to Jenner (Highway One). Follow Highway One north. (scenic Russian River area)
or
Highway 101 north to East Washington Street exit in Petaluma, turning left off exit. Follow straight through the town of Petaluma and continue west through Bodega Bay (Highway One). Follow Highway One up coast, through Jenner and beyond. (scenic coastal drive, somewhat quicker route)

From the East Bay:

Take the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge to Highway 101. Go north through Santa Rosa to the River Road exit. Follow River Road through Guerneville, and continue to Jenner (Highway One). Follow Highway One north.

From Sacramento Area:

Interstate 80 West. Take Highway 37 west at Vallejo approximately 16 miles to Lakeville Road. Turn right on Lakeville Road for 11 miles where you will meet Highway 101. Go under the freeway overpass into Petaluma and turn left onto East Washington Street. Continue on this road through Boedga Bay to Highway One. Follow Highway One through Jenner and continue north.

From Coastal Points North:

Pick up Highway 101 north of Crescent City and follow south to Highway One at Leggett. Continue south to the Redwood Coast area.

Some maps appear to have easier routes to the coast, but most of the east/west roads are extremely curvy and slow, with steep grades and some parts are unpaved. Many of these scenic alternatives are gorgeous, but need to be driven with care. Enjoy the trip, and no matter which route you choose, you will love the scenery.
